Amu Darya river (Oxus to the Greeks)
Southeast of Khiva we crossed the Amu Darya, one of the two main rivers of Uzbekistan. It now peters out before reaching the remains of the Aral Sea because of the amount of water used to irrigate cotton and food crops.
